Automated Water Metering Integration Technology and Use in San Diego County Backgrounder
Within San Diego County, there are several examples of water retailers at various stages of utilizing automated metering technology. Most water agencies are using, considering, or have considered using automated metering technology, however only about half currently use the technology, and several of those are using it in a very limited fashion. Some have implemented, or are implementing, full networks, and are touting a successful system, while others have performed analyses and pilot studies and concluded that the technology is not yet consistent enough to guarantee the appropriate returns through savings and/or it does not currently make sense for their community's specific topography.
